Moving to a small city in Minas Gerais, Brazil
When I tell friends from Brazil that I’m living in Timóteo, they usually have this reaction…
“Where?? Why??”
It doesn’t help that for the first few months after deciding to move, I was pronouncing the name of my city like it would sound in Spanish. (In Portuguese, the T sounds like a Ch. )
Although our city is small, rural, and people complain that there isn’t much to do, I love it.
Reasons why I like Timóteo
- We are near beautiful state parks, reserves, and some of the most biodiverse areas in the world. There are also monkeys.
- Everyone has been warm and welcoming, even if you barely speak Portuguese.
- With Uber, Blablacar, buses and even a train, I have more transit options than in rural Texas.
- Fresh food is everywhere, and the Sunday market is one big party. This is the region for Brazilian food.
- There are tons of gyms with personal trainers, hiking and climbing groups, and a craft beer pub right across the street from my work. (I also have health insurance)
- I can walk the five minutes to school so I don’t have to spend hours in commute to work.
- WATERFALLS
I’m sure I will find more reasons to love Timóteo as time goes on (as well as reasons to not like it.) For now, I’m very happy here and have a spare room, so please come visit. 🙂
