Where is Taiskirchen?
Taiskirchen is nestled in Upper Austria near the German border and was once part of Bavaria. Since 1990, it’s been a market town or Marktgemeinde.
What can you do?
Taiskirchen hosts several festivals every year and has its own market music band that was founded in 1849. Visitors can explore the Taiskirchner bike and hiking trail which winds through the hills of the central Innviertel. The Taiskirchen Reservoir offers swimming, camping and barbecuing.
Some famous festivals include Rock in Gaisbach in May; Sea Festival, usually at the end of June; Court Festival in July; and Gruamfest in June. A football hobby tournament is also held every year. In winter, the drag lift on the Kinzenberg opens, allowing visitors to use the ski resort.
Getting there
You can take transport from major cities including Salzburg, Munich, Prague and Vienna. A combination of trains and buses will take you to Ried im Innkreis which is next to Taiskirchen. However, I recommend renting a car or carpooling if you want to arrive quickly.
What to eat in Austria
Taiskirchen will always hold a place in my heart because it’s where my pen pal Stefanie lives. When my best friend and I toured Europe together in 2015, we stayed with Stef and her family in Taiskirchen. Her mom cooked elaborate meals for us every day, and we got to participate in her dad’s 50th birthday. Austrian cuisine is full of fresh bread, well-cured meats, strong cheese and schnitzel. We drank coffee, tea and summer shandy, and ate incredible desserts.
Although Taiskirchen is a place most people can’t find on the map, the Austrian countryside is worth a visit. Come for a local festival, to explore the winter ski resort or hear the market band play.
