After completing my internship in Eastern Europe, I made a short video and an interactive presentation using my photographs. This will be used to educate people about the culture of the Roma people of Slovakia and raise funds so the Roma Press Agency can produce a documentary about human trafficking in Roma communities.
When doing any kind of journalism or photography overseas, you walk a narrow gap between telling the story and exploiting the story. It’s tempting to manipulate facts or focus on overly dramatic or depressing aspects in order to get more views or donations. However, there are multiple realities and sides to every story, and I hope that any work I produce will give a more complete narrative of a place and people. I will always be influenced by my own narrow world views, privileges and past experiences so please remember to do your research and keep your eyes and ears alert when reading travel writing and or viewing travel photography.
Thanks for your support. –
