Uçhisar,Turkey: Explore My City!

Where is Uçhisar?

Uçhisar is found next to the magnificent Pigeon Valley (Güverçinlik Vadisi) in the region of Cappadocia in Turkey. It’s possible that ancient peoples, including the Hittites, may have used the natural structures of the cliffs for safety from invaders. The city is on the edge of Göreme National Park, and its landscape is scattered with fantastical fairy chimneys.

What can you do there?

The main attraction in Uçhisar is the spectacular 60-meter-high castle-mountain, right in the middle of the city. Visitors pay a small fee and climb to the top of the castle’s cylindrical tower. I went as the sun was setting, and the views of the valley were incredible. You can hike from the city through the Pigeon Valley, explore its caves and dovecotes, and make it to the nearby city of Göreme in about two hours. In Göreme, you have access to excursions including ATV tours and trips to the Underground City. I stayed in a beautiful guesthouse that cost less than 15 euros per night. They helped me set up a hot air balloon tour, which was a once in a lifetime experience. Other people stay in cave hotels, which offer unique and luxurious amenities.

Getting there

To get to Uçhisar, I took a bus from Istanbul to Ankara, stayed with my friend Erzem in Ankara, and then took another bus to Nevşehir. Direct buses to Nevşehir and Göreme also run from Istanbul. From Nevşehir, there is a local bus that goes to Uçhisar, but mine never arrived. Thankfully, I was able to get a taxi with other travelers at the bus station and made it to Uçhisar.

What to eat in Turkey

I had some amazing meals in Turkey, including at a restaurant in Uçhisar that was recommended by my guesthouse owner. (I found my guesthouse in a Facebook group for solo female travelers, and it did not disappoint.) The meal was delicious and cost less than five dollars. Every morning, my guest house provided me with incredible breakfast spreads at no extra cost. This was definitely the fanciest place I’ve stayed while solo traveling.

Worth the trip?

Turkey has impressed me with its hospitality, easy-to-use public transport, exceptional food and incredible nature and culture. I definitely recommend a trip to the Cappadocia region. Save your money for the main expense: the hot air balloon ride which I promise is worth it.

      Sandy,
It’s chicken served with rice, small pieces of bread and some peppers, tomatoes and mushrooms. On the side, next to the rice, is a bit of an artistic salad (the chef used to work at a five-star restaurant before he came back home to work, so he had some style with the tomatoes 🙂 And then there’s a type of yogurt dipping sauce. It was really good!
